The endangered greater adjutant stork population has got a violent jerk very recently, due to indiscriminate waste dumping activity near the lone Ramsar site of Assam, the Deepor Beel. Newspaper reports suggests death of more than 20 greater adjutant storks in Deepor beel and carcasses of the same has been recovered from the locality. This indicates a severe lack of consciousness and concern on the part of the people as well as the authority, who use such ecologically significant sites as waste dumping ground. Pollution to the water bodies and the environment has been increasing the threats to the wildlife, all thanks to the absence of civic sense and awareness within the human community and the authorities. Unless, such mindsets are cured, there will many more such species, sacrificing their lives due to our foolishness.
