Advantage Assam, subtitled as India‘s expressway to ASEAN has raised a question on the minds of the common people -how these crores of investments will be materialized? Assam, an agrarian economy has 80% agriculture dependent population. Flood, drought and many other factor turn these people in to landless tenant farmers, who are marginal and poor. While a proper, strategic focus on agricultural sector can be a boon for these population, the recent trend of converting agricultural land in to commercial areas, utilizing forest fringe areas in destructing industries by the govt.s has a serious implication for the state in the long run. People’s rights over land and its natural resources should be protected and investments should encourage protection of these precious resources, if we want Assam to be the leader in sustainable development. But current strategies does not seem to have such perspectives, which is a matter of concern for the indigenous communities of the state.
