While 50000 farmers from rural areas of Maharashtra staged a long march from Nasik to Mumbai, BJP MP Poonam Mahajan has remarked this as ‘being influenced by Urban Maoism’. Such attempts to reduce a protest by farmers to mere terrorism or propaganda shows the mentality of the ruling elites, for whom farmers are nothing but vote banks. Flowery promises, pseudo-developmental policies, so-called digital happenings do not change the harsh realities that are being faced by the marginal farmers in rural India. The people, who supplies the nation with food are the ones that starve and no digital show, glittery glory and ‘typical’ political oration can nullify these realities. People in power need to understand that farmers are the pillars of their power and anything can happen when these farmers are being deprived of from their due.
